AR Rahman started his musical career by helping his father, film score composer RK Shekhar, in a studio at the age of four. He left school to pursue his passion for music after the death of his father. At the age of 11, he joined the orchestra of Malayalam composer MK Arjunan following his training from Master Dhanraj and soon collaborated with composers like Ramesh Naidu and Ilaiyaraaja. In a shocking turn of events, the 57-year-old singer and his wife, Saira Banu, split up after 29 years of marriage. In a statement, her attorney Vandana Shah explained that their separation was due to the emotional strain of their relationship. Since the situation was precarious, Rahman also issued a statement and asked for privacy.

For the unversed, IIT Madras recently presented AR Rahman with an award by dedicating the Experiential Technology Innovation Centre (XTIC), a Center of Excellence in Virtual Reality and related subjects.
