On Friday, July 26, actress Ayesha Takia expressed her condemnation on social media regarding a distressing incident that occurred at GT World Mall in Bengaluru, where an elderly farmer named Fakirappa was denied entry due to his traditional attire, a dhoti. Ayesha shared a widely circulated video showcasing the unfortunate event, which has sparked widespread indignation and debate.

The video depicts the humiliating experience of Fakirappa, who was refused entry to the mall solely based on his choice of clothing, a dhoti, which is a traditional and culturally significant garment in Indian society.

Sharing the video, Ayesha wrote, “This is so upsetting... Does western attire have more respect and value? Do we blatantly disrespect and shun our own people for wearing clothing that belongs to us, to our very own people? In a diverse, cultural nation, deeply rooted in wonderful traditions, we discriminate against our very own... Shameful.”

Following the incident, the civic authorities promptly sealed the mall, citing non-payment of tax arrears as the primary reason, while also serving a notice to the mall management seeking a detailed clarification regarding the circumstances surrounding the farmer's incident. Furthermore, the BBMP stipulated that the mall management must submit a comprehensive statement regarding the incident within a span of 24 hours, thereby ensuring that a thorough explanation is provided for the discriminatory actions perpetrated against the farmer.
