Sanjay Leela Bhansali's cinematic vision is still evident as Bajirao Mastani celebrates its ninth anniversary. Well-known for his extravagant storytelling and deep understanding of historical themes, he created a film that has enthralled viewers ever since it came out in 2015. Priyanka Chopra makes the maximum impact among the main characters with her performance as Kashibai, the first wife of Peshwa Bajirao I, in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period epic Bajirao Mastani (2015)
Even though movies are fictional, there are instances when they evoke strong emotions in viewers, making them connect with the characters. This is particularly true for one of the individuals we will be talking about today.
Despite being wronged, Kashibai remains proud and dignified, refusing to do anything wrong, which is why we are team Kashibai all the way!
Priyanka Chopra's 'Kashibai' came with her own baggage of fears and insecurities (Picture: X)
As a humble royal damsel who faithfully performs her duties as a wife, daughter-in-law, and Maratha Peshwin, Priyanka Chopra's role is predictable from the beginning. Along the process, however, she discovers her voice and her role in the narrative. Kashi is still a loving wife, but his partner does not reciprocate. At the first chance, he falls in love with Mastani.
Don't forget that in the era when the narrative takes place, polygamous marriages among royalty were fairly usual, and if Mastani had been a well-known Hindu princess, it would not have been a big deal.
She makes every effort to maintain her pride and fulfil her responsibilities when she comes out of the palace to perform the aarti and greet her husband and mastani.
One instance where Kashibai tries to protect Mastani and her newborn child and treats her with the utmost courtesy despite her hurt.
Another scene where Bajirao finally pays Kashi a visit in her chamber, however, is the standout scene since it perfectly captures Kashi's stance. She informs him that he is no longer allowed to visit her chamber, even though they may continue to be married for political reasons. There is a point at which she makes it apparent that she will not sit around and act as though nothing has changed between them, even though he has already taken another woman.
She chooses to stand up for her dignity and deny Bajirao the gratification of making a concession.
