Renowned Bengali film director Arun Roy passed away at the age of 56 on Thursday, January 2 following a battle with severe lung infection and cancer. Following the confirmation of his death by a doctor treating him at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, actor Prosenjit Chatterjee paid his tribute to the ‘Bagha Jatin’ director for films that made people “think anew”.

Prosenjit Chatterjee took to his X handle and paid tribute to the late director. His post read, "From Arun Roy's 'Agaro' to 'Bagha Jatin'—each of his films in a decade has made us think anew. This morning, though he lost his long battle with cancer..his movies will remain his true triumph..condolences to Arun's family."

Dr. Kinjal Nanda, who was treating Roy at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, confirmed his demise on his Facebook, as per a report in India Today. He also paid tribute to the late director and wrote, "Stay in peace, my Hiralal, just like the original Hiralal."

Nanda also informed that Arun Roy's body would be taken to his Haridevpur residence at 1 pm on Thursday. Afterward, it would be placed at Technicians’ Studio for fans and admirers to pay their last respects.

Arunava Raychaudhuri aka Arun Roy was reportedly hospitalized due to a decline in his health. Initially he was admitted in the ICU and receiving support from a BiPAP system but his condition worsened over the past few days, which led to the use of a ventilator.

Arun Roy rose to fame with his debut movie Hiralal, in which Dr Kinjal Nanda played the lead role. In 2023, Arun gave magnum opus movie Bagha Jatin. During the production of the film he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. After news of his demise, fans are flooding the social media with their tributes.
