Mallidi Vassishta's 2022 blockbuster Bimbisara is getting a much-anticipated prequel. Fans were excited to see Nandamuri Kalyan Ram in the lead role, especially since the announcement coincided with his birthday. However, the news of Anil Paduri taking over directorial duties has left some fans puzzled. Bimbisara was a massive hit under Mallidi Vassishta's direction, so fans were surprised to learn that Anil Paduri would direct the prequel. Paduri is known for his work on the 2021 film Romantic starring Akash Puri and Ketika Sharma. This change has led to mixed reactions from the audience.

The prequel announcement poster features an elephant with a red flag leading an army to war, hinting at an epic storyline. The film’s producers, NTR Arts, shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Get ready to witness the VIRTUE of a LEGEND who ruled Trigarthala ages before BIMBISARA. #NKR22 - A PREQUEL to the blockbuster #Bimbisara. Happy Birthday, @NANDAMURIKALYAN. Exciting updates soon! @AnilPaduri @NTRArtsOfficial.”

While the prequel news excited many, the change in directors sparked a wave of confusion. One fan commented, “Maku @DirVassishta ee director aa kavali (We want director Vassishta),” and another said, “Dear Kalyan Ram anna we are expecting BIMBISARA IN the Direction of Vasistha garu not Anthor one. (sic)” Others questioned the necessity of a new director, with one asking, “Vere director nduk bro. (Why a new director?)”

The original Bimbisara released in 2022 tells the tale of an evil emperor trapped in a mirror and transported to the modern world. Kalyan Ram's portrayal of the titular character received widespread acclaim. The prequel aims to delve deeper into the character's backstory and the world he comes from. In addition to the Bimbisara prequel, Kalyan Ram will star in Pradeep Chilukuri's next project alongside Saiee Manjrekar and Vijayashanthi.
