South Korean veteran actor, O Yeong-su, known for his role in ‘Squid Game’, has been convicted of sexual misconduct. According to a statement by local court on Friday, the 79-year-old actor was found guilty of assaulting a woman in 2017.The Seongnam Branch of the Suwon District Court told AFP that the actor received a sentence of eight months in prison, which has been suspended for two years.
Additionally, the court has mandated him to attend 40 hours of classes focusing on sexual violence, the court stated. Judge Jeong Yeon-ju, as reported by the court, emphasized that the victim's descriptions of the assault and her statements are consistent and indicate experiences that can only be described by someone who has lived through them.
For the unversed, O Yeong-su was formally charged in 2022 without being detained, facing accusations of sexually assaulting an unnamed woman on two separate occasions. These incidents occurred while O was in a rural area for a theatre performance back in 2017, one instance taking place on a walking path and the other in front of the victim's residence, according to details from the Suwon District Court.
On September 17, 2021, 'Squid Game' made its debut worldwide, garnering critical praise and global attention. It quickly became Netflix's most-viewed series, dominating screens in 94 countries. Within its first four weeks, it captivated over 142 million households and amassed a staggering 1.65 billion viewing hours, surpassing even ‘Bridgerton’ as the platform's most-watched program.
The series has been showered with accolades, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries, or Television Film for O Yeong-su. Furthermore, Lee Jung-jae and HoYeon Jung clinched Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, respectively, marking a historic moment as the first Korean actors to win in these categories.
