About Jeju Air Flight 2216 Crash

Jeju Air Flight 2216 was a scheduled international passenger flight that was operated by Jeju Air, departing from Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, Thailand, and destined for Muan International Airport in Muan County, South Korea. On December 29, 2024, as the Boeing 737-800 aircraft approached its destination, it suffered an apparent bird strike, which necessitated a go-around maneuver. Unfortunately, during the second landing attempt, the plane failed to deploy its landing gear, resulting in a belly landing that occurred well beyond the normal touchdown zone.

The aircraft subsequently overran the runway and crashed into a berm that encased a concrete structure supporting an antenna array for the instrument landing system. Tragically, the collision resulted in the loss of 179 lives, with only two cabin crew members, who were seated in the rear of the plane, surviving with injuries.

This devastating accident marked a somber milestone in aviation history, as it became the deadliest disaster involving a South Korean airliner since the 1997 crash of Korean Air Flight 801 in Guam, which claimed 229 lives. Moreover, it surpassed the 2002 crash of Air China Flight 129, which killed 129 people, to become the deadliest aviation incident on South Korean soil. Notably, this tragic event also represented the first fatal crash in the 19-year history of Jeju Air, a low-cost carrier that had established a reputation for safety and reliability.
