BTS Jungkook, known for his global influence, couldn't participate in the 2024 Superbowl halftime show due to his ongoing military enlistment. This absence, however, has sparked criticism from a Korean cultural critic, who labelled it a "missed opportunity."

According to recent reports, Jungkook received an invitation to perform at the prestigious NFL Superbowl halftime show alongside Usher. The two artists had collaborated on the remix of Standing Next to You, a song featured in Jungkook’s debut solo album, GOLDEN. Despite Usher’s request, Jungkook reportedly declined due to his mandatory military service, which began in December 2023. The 2024 Superbowl took place two months later in February.

Cultural critic Kim Heon Sik commented on the situation, expressing disappointment. He suggested that HYBE, BTS’ management agency, failed to recognize the importance of such a significant stage. He noted that Jungkook’s participation could have further cemented his status as a solo artist and highlighted BTS' global influence, especially since the Superbowl halftime show is renowned for hosting iconic performances from global stars like Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, and Rihanna.

Many ARMYs, BTS’ dedicated fanbase, also voiced their frustration. They felt that had Jungkook's enlistment been postponed by just a couple of months, he would have been able to perform and set a new milestone by becoming the first K-pop artist to grace the Superbowl stage.

Under South Korean law, male citizens who have contributed significantly to national prestige in the fields of pop culture and the arts are permitted to postpone their mandatory military service until the age of 30. The only requirement is a letter of recommendation from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Given this, media outlets pointed out that Jungkook, who was under 30 at the time of his enlistment, could have delayed his service to seize this opportunity.

In response to these discussions, HYBE issued a brief statement, saying, “We have nothing to say,” without providing further clarification on the matter. The news reminded fans of Jungkook's performance at the 2020 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony, where he achieved a new level of global recognition. Many believe that a Superbowl halftime show performance would have elevated his position even more, making his absence a missed chance to showcase his growth as a soloist and continue BTS' legacy on an international stage.
