Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia has made history with her movie 'All We Imagine As Light' being selected for the prestigious Competition section at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. This marks the first time in 30 years that an Indian film has qualified in this section, adding to the growing recognition of Indian cinema on the global stage.
Kapadia is no stranger to Cannes, having received accolades for her previous works. Her documentary 'A Night of Knowing Nothing' won the Oeil d’or (Golden Eye) award at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, premiering under the Director’s Fortnight section. Additionally, her 2017 film 'Afternoon Clouds' was showcased at Cannes in the Short Film category, showcasing her talent and unique storytelling.
The official announcement came from the Cannes Film Festival's official page, listing Kapadia’s film among 19 other highly anticipated titles, including works by acclaimed directors such as Yorgos Lanthimos, Francis Ford Coppola, Andrea Arnold, and David Cronenberg.
'All We Imagine As Light' marks Kapadia’s narrative feature debut, further highlighting her versatility as a filmmaker. The film follows the story of Prabha, a nurse whose life is thrown into disarray after receiving an unexpected gift from her long-estranged husband. Accompanied by her younger roommate, Anu, the two embark on a road trip to a beach town where their dreams manifest in the mystical forest.

The last Indian film to compete for the coveted Palme d’Or award was the Malayalam film 'Swaham' by director Shaji N Karun in 1994. Kapadia's achievement adds to the list of Indian films that have made their mark at Cannes, including Mrinal Sen’s 'Kharij' in 1983 and the iconic 'Neecha Nagar', which won the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film in 1946.
.... just want to point out: It has been officially 25 years since an Indian film has been accepted into the #Cannes Official Selection. Last movie was Shaji Karun's SWAHAM pic.twitter.com/fel5535sYS
