New Delhi | Jagran Entertainment Desk: Deepika Padukone-starrer ‘Chhapaak’ hit the big screens today, and the occupancy of the theatres are evident of the film’s powerful message to the society. In the beginning, the film starts with Malti (Deepika) -- who is attacked in broad daylight on the streets of Delhi by a friend of the family, Bashir Khan aka Babbu and his aide -- on a job hunt trying to move on from the scars that the heinous attack has left her with. She has to undergo multiple surgeries to get rid of the emotional scars.

Once an aspiring singer, Malti’s life now becomes an intersection of her work with an NGO for acid attack victims, her surgeries and her court cases.

The struggles of Malti steers the film away from melodrama and gives the audience a powerful message, in the form of Malti’s fight against the odds with her determined smiles, the pain in her eyes and her unbeatable spirit to live her life on her own terms.

The struggles continued as the support from her family slump, due to her brother’s illness and father’s death, but Malti’s lawyer Archana (Madhurjeet Sarghi), stands by her through her painful journey supporting her in every way. Malti’s other support came as Amol (Vikrant Massey), who is her employer in the NGO in which Malti finds a job. From Malti’s petitions to ban the acid sale to the amendments in the acid violence laws, her team of lawyers, Amol and Malti stood firm and take on the system.

Talking about the acting, Deepika Padukone’s act is worthy of a standing ovation. There are many scenes in which Deepika aces the role so perfectly that will move you to tears. Deepika’s character not once succumbed to self-pity in the film making the character stronger and a winner. And as Deepika embraces her character completely, her transformation is enhanced through effective prosthetics. Devoid of even a hint of glamour, all we see is Malti throughout.

While Vikrant Massey as Amol and Madhurjeet Sarghi as her lawyer Archana pitched in laudable performances. Vikrant throughout the film was supportive and took care of every minute detail to make his role a perfect one for this powerful film.

Overall, Chhapaak’s story sends out a powerful message and is undoubtedly a brave attempt which jolts you with grim reminders in between showing the reality. Chhaapak is a sensitive film with a delicate, yet powerful, handling of a heinous crime against women, and an important story that needs to be heard.
