Renowned filmmaker, poet and journalist Pritish Nandy passed away on January 8, 2025, at the age of 73. The news of his demise was confirmed by actor Anupam Kher, who penned an emotional note on X (formerly Twitter), reminiscing about their deep bond and shared memories.
Anupam Kher expressed his grief, calling Nandy one of his "dearest and closest friends." He wrote, "Deeply deeply saddened and shocked to know about the demise of one of my dearest and closest friends #PritishNandy! Amazing poet, writer, filmmaker and a brave and unique editor/journalist! He was my support system and a great source of strength in my initial days in Mumbai."
Kher fondly recalled how Nandy had been a fearless individual and a larger-than-life personality. Their friendship, he said, was marked by a time when they were inseparable. Kher shared an anecdote about Nandy surprising him by featuring him on the covers of Filmfare and The Illustrated Weekly, gestures that he would always cherish.

Pritish Nandy was a man of many talents. Born on January 15, 1951, he was an acclaimed poet, painter, journalist and parliamentarian. Nandy authored over forty books of poetry in English and translated works from Bengali, Urdu, and Punjabi into English. His notable translations include a version of the Isha Upanishad and classical love poetry from Sanskrit.
In addition to his literary contributions, Nandy was a trailblazer in the Indian media and entertainment industry. He produced several Bollywood films, including Meerabai Not Out (2008), Raat Gayi Baat Gayi? (2009), Shaadi Ke Side Effects (2014) and Mastizaade (2015). His works reflected his creative vision and bold storytelling.

Nandy also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha, representing Maharashtra as a Shiv Sena candidate. He was an animal activist and a pioneer in creating films, television and streaming content that resonated with audiences across generations. Anupam Kher’s heartfelt tribute encapsulates the loss felt by the Indian film and literary community.
