Year Ender 2024: A closer look at select instances reveals that some movies and shows remained popular with viewers, even though sequels, prequels and other well-known intellectual property dominated the box office. These truly innovative and ground-breaking theatrical and OTT release, which range from Heeramandi to Laapataa Ladies, made their premieres in 2024 and went on to become the year's biggest stories.

1. Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's debut web series, marked his entry into the digital world. This was groundbreaking enough on its own. Heeramandi was the only Indian web series to make it onto Google's Most Searched List of 2024 worldwide. Additionally, it ranked first on IMDb's list of the 2024 Most Popular Indian Web Series.

2. Stree 2

Without a doubt, Stree 2 was a delightful surprise that broke all previous records with its huge success. The movie, which belongs to the popular horror-comedy genre, reaffirmed the value of quality content and viewers' passion for the Stree series. Stree 2, which earned Rs 874.58 crore globally and was widely praised by both critics and viewers, was the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2024 and the third-highest-grossing Indian film.

3. Pushpa 2: The Rule

Allu Arjun's Pushpa 2: The Rule, the year's biggest movie, broke box office records when it came out in December. It made Rs 72 crore on its first day of release, the highest opening for a Hindi movie ever. Strong substance always wins, and the movie earned a ton of positive word-of-mouth. The movie is currently breaking records for success; it has made over Rs 1,500 crore worldwide and is continuously growing.

4. Laapataa Ladies

With the touching, inspirational, and profoundly touching film Laapataa Ladies, filmmaker Kiran Rao made a successful comeback to the director's chair. The movie caused a sensation by being nominated for an Oscar, which was a huge accomplishment for Indian cinema and demonstrated the potency of content-driven narrative.

5. All We Imagine As Light

The award-winning movie by Payal Kapadia opens with a symphony of voices in different languages, each telling a unique story but bound together by a sense of optimism and vision for the Mumbai they call home, even though they are not native to the city.

All We Imagine as Light has been receiving praise from people all across the world. Following its Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix victory, it created history. Payal's accomplishment earned her the first Indian director to appear in the main competition area of Cannes in thirty years.

5. Maharaja

The heartwarming action-thriller Maharaja explores grief, resiliency, and how far a father would go for his child. A gripping non-linear story that is both character-driven and plot-focused is created by director Nithilan Swaminathan. 

The suspenseful finale of Maharaja was among its most talked-about features. Viewers were left with a lasting impression as the movie came to a stunning finish. The emotional stakes were raised as the story reached its climax, leading to a gratifying and thought-provoking finish.
