IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack was released on Netflix on 29th August. Since its release, the web series has been making headlines for good and bad reasons. The performances and the storyline have been highly appreciated by the audience and the critics. On the other hand, netizens are criticising the makers for using ‘Hindu’ names of the terrorists in a particular scene. It can be seen that a terrorist was informing someone over the call with ‘Hindu’ names as a code word to identify his teammates. This scene created an outrage on social media. Even the Netflix content head has been summoned by the I&B Ministry. Amid all the backlash, a picture went viral online of real-life officials who negotiated with terrorists during the IC814 Hijacking.
The negotiation was done by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led central government. A team was created that went to Kandahar to handle the situation and negotiate with the terrorists. It was led by Vivek Katju, the Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs. Home Ministry official Ajit Doval and CD Sahay from the Cabinet Secretariat were also present with him. Doval was then the chief of the Intelligence Bureau (IB). For the unversed, Ajit Doval is presently the National Security Advisor (NSA) of India. The team also included Former Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of India Brajesh Mishra and Cabinet Secretary of The Crisis Management Group of the Indian Government Prabhat Kumar.
