Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt’s movie Jigra hit the theatres on October 11, 2024. Soon after its release, the movie got embroiled in controversies. Divya Khosla Kumar's scathing allegations against the makers of Jigra, including Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt, have ignited a fiery controversy. As fans clash on social media, demanding answers to the burning question - "Is Jigra a copy of Savi?"
Divya Khosla Kumar, the director and lead actress of Savi, recently addressed the comparisons between her film and Jigra. Khosla Kumar revealed that Savi draws inspiration from the mythological tale of Savitri and Satyavan. When questioned about the similarities between the two films, she diplomatically stated, "Every film has its own journey." While acknowledging the comparisons, Khosla Kumar claimed that Savi is a pioneering film in its genre. However, this assertion raises eyebrows, as numerous female-centric films in India have preceded Savi, featuring strong female leads rescuing their loved ones.
Dissimilarities between Savi and Jigra
Upon closer inspection, Jigra and Savi display notable differences despite initial similarities. Alia's confident portrayal contrasts with Divya's helpless character, and their fashion choices – European versus Korean-inspired – add to the distinction. Although both films aim for emotional resonance, they have shortcomings. These differences highlight the diversity in cinematic storytelling, even when exploring similar themes.
Jigra, starring Alia Bhatt, draws striking similarities with the 1993 Bollywood classic 'Gumrah', starring Sridevi and Sanjay Dutt. Both films share a common narrative thread - rescuing a family member from jail. In Jigra, Alia endeavours to free her brother, while Sanjay Dutt's character rescues his sister in 'Gumrah'. The action-packed jailbreak scenes in both films further solidify their similarities.
Furthermore, Savi, starring Divya Khosla Kumar, is not an original story either. It is, in fact, a Hindi remake of the acclaimed French film 'Pour Elle' (2008) and its American counterpart The Next Three Days (2010). This revelation raises important questions about the nature of inspiration and adaptation in cinema. While Jigra and Savi may not be entirely original, they demonstrate the power of storytelling through diverse perspectives and cultural contexts.
