Jigra hit the theatres on October 11, 2024. The movie received mixed reviews from fans and critics alike post its release. Jigra stars Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina in lead roles. Alia has also co-produced the movie with Karan Johar. Jigra's release has been overshadowed by controversy, sparking online debates and attention. The film faces allegations of box office manipulation, unprofessional conduct, nepotism and cancelled press screenings, making its journey to the big screen tumultuous.

As Jigra struggles at the box office, let's have a look at the controversies surrounding Alia Bhatt-starrer movie.

Jigra Controversy: All Allegations Against Alia Bhatt's Movie

Recently, in an interview with Tried&Refused Productions, Director Vasan Bala revealed his disappointment with co-producer Karan Johar for sharing an unfinished draft of Jigra with Alia Bhatt without his consent. Bala recounted that he had sent a rough outline to Johar, only to discover that it was forwarded to Bhatt mere hours later. "I was unhappy when Karan told me he'd already sent it to Alia," Bala said, adding that Johar downplayed the issue, stating it was standard industry practice.

The video sparked nepotism debates, with many assuming Alia Bhatt received preferential treatment from Karan Johar.

Here's a video of Vasan Bala saying in a recent interview that he didn't plan Alia to be the part of the film. Before he could even complete his script properly, Karan already sent the script to her.

Pre-Release Media Screening Halted

Dharma Productions cancelled Jigra's pre-release press screenings, citing a new policy for their upcoming films. Sources revealed the decision aims to combat corruption among some critics, who allegedly accept Rs 15,000 to Rs 60,000 for favourable reviews. Influencers posing as critics also orchestrate negative reviews, prompting Dharma to reassess their screening strategy.

Box Office Scandal

Divya Khosla Kumar sparked controversy by accusing Alia Bhatt of inflating Jigra's box office numbers. She shared an image of an empty theatre, implying Alia bought tickets to fake successful collections. Karan Johar responded with a cryptic message, "Silence is the best speech...," which Divya countered, asserting, "Truth offends fools." The exchange follows similarities noted between Divya's film Savi and Jigra, both featuring jailbreak plots.

Despite controversy, Jigra's box office performance remains lacklustre, earning only Rs 1.50 crore on day four, totaling Rs 18.10 crore. This marks Alia Bhatt's worst opening since 2014, raising concerns about its theatrical viability. In contrast, her solo hits Raazi and Gangubai Kathiawadi debuted with significantly higher collections, ranging from Rs 7.5 crore to Rs 10.5 crore.

Bijou Thaangjam’s Allegations

Bijou Thaangjam, a Manipur-based actor, publicly slammed Jigra's makers for "unprofessional behaviour" after being considered for a role. He expressed frustration at being left uninformed, stating that his time was wasted and the experience felt dismissive.
