Jane Birkin, British singer and actor passed away at 76 in Paris. Birkin spent nearly six decades in the limelight in her adopted home, France, and was known as the 'French Icon’. She moved to Paris in her 20s, without knowing the French language, and was also affectionately called France's favourite 'Anglaise’.

Birkin soon fell in love with French actor and singer Serge Gainsbourg. The two quickly became the talk of the town. Gainsbourg who was nearly 20 years older than Birkin was seen collaborating with her professionally. They also performed on ‘Je t'aime… moi non plus’, a sultry duet, whose explicit lyrics were banned in several countries.

Her relationship with Gainsbourg made the actor a popular name and she quickly became a star in her own right, but a fashion star first. She was the inspiration for the famous 'Birkin Bag' by the French luxury house Hermes. Representing a very Parisian style, the actress made a high-standard name in the world of fashion.

The cause of Jane Birkin's death is not yet known. She had suffered a stroke in 202, and since then had been in poor health. She starred in notable films including 'Death On The Nile', 'La Piscine', 'Blow Up', and more.
