Bollywood veteran and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan strongly protested when Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh addressed her as 'Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan.' The Samajwadi Party leader made it clear that she preferred to be recognised by her own name alone. Objecting to being identified by her husband's name, she asserted, "Sir, just Jaya Bachchan would have been sufficient."

When Harivansh called her to speak, Jaya, criticising the practice of calling wife by husband's name, retorted, "Ye jo hain kuch naya tarika hain ki mahilaayen apne pati ke naam se jaani jaye. Unka koi astitva nahi. Unki koi upalabdh hi nahi hain, apne mein aur astitva nahi hain. Ye jo naya shuru hua hain, I just…" (Some new method has emerged that women have to be known by their husband’s name. Women have no identity. They have no achievements, no identity of their own. This new thing, I just…)

Laughing off the comment, Harivansh Narayan Singh, who was presiding over the session, responded, "I merely repeated the full name as it was written here." He attempted to diffuse the situation by acknowledging her numerous achievements.

The incident swiftly garnered attention online, with many lauding Jaya. One fan admired her bravery, while another questioned the inclusion of Amitabh’s name without her approval.
