Junaid Khan’s debut film, Maharaj, directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra, generated significant attention due to a controversy that nearly stalled its release. Despite the delays, the film has been well-received by audiences, and Junaid Khan, son of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, recently addressed the issue.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Junaid expressed that neither he nor the filmmakers intended to offend anyone. “I certainly did not feel that way when I heard the script and through my conversations with Sidharth sir and Aditya Chopra sir. The film celebrates a community that stood up for what was right over a hundred and seventy years ago when these sorts of things (gender inequality, exploitation of women, religious superstitions) were rampant everywhere. I think as more and more people are watching the film, they are seeing it for what was intended,” he said.

The release of Maharaj faced an initial setback when the Gujarat High Court intervened due to concerns raised by the Vaishnavite Pustimargi sect over its portrayal of their religious beliefs. However, the court later lifted the stay, allowing the film to stream on Netflix on June 21. The court concluded that the film was not specifically intended to target the sect, contrary to the allegations.

Reflecting on the nerve-wracking period of uncertainty surrounding the film’s release, the 31-year-old actor shared, “We were all a bit on edge when the film was stalled. As a team, we drew hope from the positive reactions at the media and industry screenings held the day before the intended release. I’m thankful to the judiciary for seeing the film for what it is and allowing its release.”

Junaid also expressed his hopes for those initially apprehensive about the film’s portrayal of their beliefs, saying, “The positive word of mouth and reviews are doing that already [sending a message]. I hope that everyone sees the film and the intention behind the film for what it is.”

Maharaj has quickly become a sensation, trending at number one in India on OTT platforms and securing a place in the top 10 in 22 other countries. Junaid Khan stars as 19th-century social reformer Karsandas Mulji, with Jaideep Ahlawat as Jadunath Maharaj, Shalini Pandey as Kishori and Sharvari Wagh as Viraj.

The film has inspired audiences with its storyline and social message, emphasizing the importance of worshipping the divine rather than individuals claiming to be God. It also encourages viewers not to blindly follow traditions, highlighting the need for critical thinking and social reform. Maharaj reflects that places of worship and religion should be uplifting and not used to exploit the vulnerable.
