Katrina Kaif has been ruling the big screen for over two decades now with her back-to-back blockbuster films. But people must have forgotten that the actress faced a lot of backlash in the initial days of her career. Katrina debuted in Bollywood with Kaizad Gustad’s Boom in 2003. She could not connect to the audience because of her 'improper' Hindi dialect at the beginning of her career. Many of her early movies were dubbed and later when she started lending her own voice, people started trolling her for the way she spoke Hindi. The diva was born to a British mother Suzanne Turquotte and Indian Kashmiri father Mohammed Kaif in British Hong Kong. Throughout her childhood, the actress lived in many countries but she stated that after coming to India she felt a sense of belonging here.
One of Katrina’s old videos went viral on the social media platform Reddit, where she can be seen talking about India. In the interview, Barkha Dutt asked Katrina if she felt disconnected from her Indian side after her parents got divorced and her father stayed away. To which the leading actress replied, “I don’t think so because, you know, it’s such a basic thing to say that’ll probably sound very stupid but you must’ve seen it enough in your friends how you have very dark children who grow up to be very fair? I was a very dark child. There was no way you would look at me and say that this is a Caucasian child. I was always known as how exotic or how ethnic.”
The actress continued, “So, I was always aware of that and somewhere, I lacked a sense of belonging because I travelled to so many countries. By coincidence, those countries were the far east Hong Kong, China, Japan, France, very predominantly fair, white Caucasian countries. So that instilled it in me more. Which is probably why when I came to India, maybe other people would’ve gotten afraid that I’d just come to another country and landed up here. But probably for me, I felt such a sense of belonging because I realised that it just fit somehow.”
