Kiran Rao is one of the renowned filmmakers of Indian Cinema who has a wide range of films in kitty including India’s official entry to the Oscars Laapataaa Ladies. Being the ex-wife of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, she felt that Khan was credited often for her success which she called ‘unfair’ and ‘low’. Rao also asserted that Aamir has played a big role in her life but others attributing her accomplishments solely to him is not right. 

In a chat with Kareena Kapoor for her chat show, Kiran said “It is natural. He has been known to do such quality work. Personally, I attribute a lot of success in life to having a very supportive and bright partner who intellectually matches me and supports everything I do. He has played a big role in my life, but for others to attribute my accomplishments solely to him is a… and I think a lot of women are accustomed to that happen to them.” 

She also shared what she loves, hates and tolerates about Aamir. Kiran added, “Once he likes something, he is entirely behind it. He is a 100 per cent guy. If he doesn’t like it, he is really honest, but if he likes something, he will really do his best for it. He is literally one of the best people you can work with as a creative person.” 

She also said about one quality that she ‘barely tolerates’ about Aamir Khan. The filmmaker concluded, “I would like to say… he can go off and lecture. Like he will give certain lamba lectures about things sometimes and those, I don’t like. I mean, it’s not quite mansplaining, but coming close.” 

Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan got married in 2005 and announced their divorce in 2021. They welcomed their first child Azad via surrogacy in 2011.
