L2: Empuraan Controversy: Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran's highly anticipated Malayalam action thriller movie, L2: Empuraan, has been at the center of controversy, sparking backlash from Hindu nationalist groups. In response to the criticism, the film's lead actor, Mohanlal, took to social media to issue a heartfelt apology, acknowledging the distress caused by certain scenes in the movie. Mohanlal emphasized his responsibility as an artist to ensure that his films do not offend or target any particular political movement, ideology or religious group. He expressed his sincere regret for the harm caused and announced that the team had collectively decided to remove the contentious scenes from the film.
L2 Empuraan To Undergo 24 Cuts
According to a report in ETimes, the censor board has revealed that L2: Empuraan underwent 24 voluntary cuts. To address concerns, a disturbing sequence of a woman's head being banged against a wall was reduced to a brief flash.
Additionally, a scene depicting physical violence against women was trimmed by half.
The film's visuals were also modified to remove or replace images featuring the national flag's colors in an interpreted form, resulting in a total deletion of 10 seconds and a replacement of 4 seconds. Here is a list of 24 cuts that the movie will undergo:
Soon after the movie received backlash, Mohanlal took to X and issued an apology. He wrote, “As an artist, it is my duty to ensure that none of my films are hostile to any political movement, ideology or religious group. The team of Empuraan and I sincerely regret the distress caused to my loved ones, and with the realization that the responsibility for it lies with all of us who worked on the film, we have decided together to remove such subjects from the movie.”
L2: Empuraan is a 2025 Indian Malayalam-language political action thriller film directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, with a screenplay by Murali Gopy. The film is set against the backdrop of the 2002 Gujarat riots and features a fictional storyline. Produced by Antony Perumbavoor, Subaskaran Allirajah, and Gokulam Gopalan, L2: Empuraan is the sequel to the 2019 film Lucifer and the second installment in the Lucifer trilogy. The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Abhimanyu Singh, Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier and Indrajith Sukumaran, among others.
