Laapataa Ladies' writer breaks silence on plagiarism allegations: Laapataa Ladies hit the theatres in March 2024. The movie was selected as the Indian entry for the Best International Feature Film for the 97th Academy Awards, but was not nominated. Recently, Laapataa Ladies faced plagiarism allegations as netizens pointed out similarities between Kiran Rao-directorial film and Arabic film Burqa City. Now, the film’s writer Biplab Dev has broken silence on the ongoing controversy surrounding the movie.

Biplab Dev said in a statement, “The story, the dialogues, the characters, and the scenes - all stem from years of research and honest reflection. Our story, characters, and dialogues are 100% original. Any allegations of plagiarism are completely untrue (sic).”

“I first registered the film's detailed synopsis, outlining the entire story with the working title Two Brides, with the Screenwriters Association on July 3, 2014 (sic),” he further explained.

Biplab Dev stated, “There is a scene that clearly describes the groom bringing home the wrong bride and being shocked and stricken upon realising his mistake because of the veil, along with the rest of his family. This is where the story takes off (sic).”

He further noted, “The concept of veils and disguises resulting in mistaken identities is a classical form of storytelling used for centuries by writers such as William Shakespeare, Alexandre Dumas and Rabindranath Tagore (sic).”

Laapataa Ladies, also known internationally as Lost Ladies, is a heartwarming 2023 Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film that has captured the hearts of audiences worldwide. Directed by the talented Kiran Rao and produced by Rao, Aamir Khan, and Jyoti Deshpande, this film boasts an impressive cast, including Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan. At its core, Laapataa Ladies tells the engaging story of two young newlywed brides who experience an unexpected twist when they are accidentally exchanged during a train ride to their husbands' homes.
