Veteran actor Manoj Kumar known for doing patriotic movies like Purab Aur Paschim, Kranti, died at the age of 87 in Mumbai. The legendary actor was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubai Ambani Hospital and passed away due to heart-related complications. According to the medical certificate issued by the hospital, the secondary cause of his death is said to be decompensated liver cirrhosis. The actor was born in Abbottabad on July 24, 1937, a small town in the North-West Frontier Province (now in Pakistan).

He made his Bollywood debut with 1957 movie Fashion. Later, he got his break in Kanch Ki Gudiya in 1961. Kumar went on do several cult Bollywood movies such as Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Purab Aur Paschim, Woh Kaun Thi?, Shor, Gumnaam, Shaheed, Himalay Ki God Mein, Patthar Ke Sanam, Hariyali Aur Rasta, Mera Naam Joker, Do Badan, Neel Kamal, Sanyasi and Jai Hind to name a few. Manoj Kumar was a recipient of several prestigious awards, such as the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015 for his immense contribution to Indian Cinema. Notably, Manoj Kumar was not just an actor but was also a director. He also proved his skills by becoming an editor, screenwriter and Lyricist. 

PM Modi Pays Tribute To Manoj Kumar

Condolences started pouring in across the country for the veteran actor Manoj Kumar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his condolences to the family of the actor. He tweeted, "Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films. Manoj Ji's works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti." 

 

 

 

 

 

President Droupadi Murmu also shared her condolences after Manoj Kumar's demise. She tweeted, "Saddened by the demise of legendary actor and film-maker Manoj Kumar Ji. He has left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. During his long and distinguished career he came to be known for his patriotic films which promoted a sense of pride in India’s contribution and values. The iconic characters of national heroes, farmers and soldiers he brought to life will remain etched in our collective memory. His cinema will instil national pride and inspire generations to come. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers." 

Bollywood Celebrities Pay Tribute To Manoj Kumar 

Filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri tweeted, "India’s first truly original and committed Indic filmmaker, Dadasaheb Phalke awardee Shri Manoj Kumar ji, left us today. A proud nationalist. A staunch Hindu at heart. A visionary director who gave Indian cinema a new grammar — of song picturisation, of meaningful lyrics, of cinema that didn’t just entertain but remembered to belong. He made patriotism cinematic, without noise. He made nationalism poetic, without apology. In a time of borrowed voices and secondhand aesthetics, he dared to be rooted. Patriots and artists like him never die. They simply transcend — into memory, into celluloid, into the nation’s heartbeat. अन्य कलाकार मृत्यु को प्राप्त होते हैं, पर देशभक्त कलाकार कालजयी होते हैं।" 

Aamir Khan also paid tribute to the legendary actor Manoj Kumar. He said, "Manoj Kumar was not just an actor, and film-maker, he was an institution. I have learnt so much watching his films. His films were often based on important social themes which brought him really close to the common man. My heartfelt condolences to his family." 

Akshay Kumar tweeted, "I grew up learning from him that there’s no emotion like love and pride for our country. And if we actors won’t take the lead in showing this emotion, who will? Such a fine person, and one of the biggest assets of our fraternity. RIP Manoj Sir. Om Shanti." 

Ajay Devgn bid farewell to Bharat Kumar on X. He tweeted, "Manoj Kumar ji was not just a cinematic icon - he was a personal milestone in my family’s journey. He gave my father, Veeru Devgan, his very first break as an action director in Roti Kapda Aur Makaan. From there, their collaboration continued all the way to Kranti, creating moments that are now part of Indian cinema’s golden history. Manoj ji’s films - Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim, Shor, Kranti, they weren’t just films…they were national emotions. His creative genius, unwavering patriotism, and storytelling depth set a benchmark that very few have matched. As Indian cinema bids farewell to its Bharat Kumar - a storyteller, a patriot, and a legend. I also wish to say thank you for shaping my father’s journey and for inspiring countless storytellers like me. Your legacy, Manoj ji, is eternal. Om Shanti. - Ajay Devgn." 

Manoj Bajpayee tweeted, "With the loss of Manoj Kumar Sahab, we bid farewell to a pillar of Hindi cinema. His art celebrated the spirit of India like no other. Deepest condolences to his family and countless admirers. #ManojKumar." 

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar tweeted, "I am saddened by the passing of the legendary actor & filmmaker, Manoj Kumar Sir, I had the privilege of interacting with him at many occasions , and he was truly an icon of Indian cinema. His storytelling & song picturizations in his films inspired national pride and will resonate for generations. My deepest condolences to his family members & admirers. #OmShanti." 

A user said, "#Bollywood actor, film director Manoj Kumar also known as Bharat Kumar passes away at the age of 87 years in Mumbai, Rest in Peace." Another said, "#ManojKumar Tribute to the true legend Manoj Kumar ji. Bharat Kumar ji ko Vinamra sradhanjali. Naman hai aapko." A tweet read, "Manoj Kumar ji's contributions to Indian cinema and patriotism will always be cherished. His films ignited a sense of pride and love for the nation in every heart.
