Aamir Khan's son, Junaid Khan, is set to make his debut in an upcoming Netflix film titled Maharaj, based on the true story of Karsandas Mulji, a journalist and social reformer. This marks a significant moment for Junaid, who has dedicated seven years to his journey in the film industry, finally landing this starring role. The anticipation among fans is palpable, eager to witness Junaid Khan's debut on the big screen. However, the film has sparked controversy. In recent days, Bajrang Dal has threatened to block the film's release, while a segment of social media users is calling for a ban. Their concern stems from fears that "Maharaj" might portray religious leaders and sadhus in a negative or objectionable manner.
Alongside Junaid, Maharaj features Jaideep Ahlawat and Shalini Pandey in pivotal roles, with Sharvari Wagh making a special appearance. Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films, Maharaj promises to be a compelling narrative highlighting the life and contributions of Karsandas Mulji. Along with ban, the hashtag #BoycottNetflix gained traction on X as Hindu activists voiced concerns about Maharaj potentially portraying religious leaders in a negative manner.
A user wrote, "Junaid Khan, Yash Raj Films and #Netflix will all be held responsible if this film tries to hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus by showing that sadhus and saints are miscreants and lustful, and thereby disrupts law and order. #BoycottNetflix Ban Maharaj Film." Another added, "Hindu Jana Jagruti Samithi is protesting against the movie “ Maharaj “ for disrespecting & defaming Hindu saints and sects.#BoycottNetflix...Bollywood always tries to show Hindu religious practices & its culture in poor light. About Maharaj
The upcoming Netflix film Maharaj is based on the true story of the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, a significant legal battle in India's history. Junaid Khan will portray the role of Karsandas Mulji, a journalist and social reformer, while Jaideep Ahlawat will play Jadunathji Brijratanji Maharaj, a prominent figure in the Vallabhacharya sect. Recently, a spokesperson for the Bajrang Dal called for a private screening of the film to its members before its OTT release as they expressed concerns about the portrayal of religious leaders and threatened to obstruct the film's release if their demands were not met, indicating potential legal action if necessary.
