Director Siddharth P Malhotra's recent revelation at a press conference has sparked intrigue among fans of Indian cinema. As per Hindustan Times, speaking about his Netflix India film Maharaj, which released on June 21, Malhotra disclosed that the late Irrfan Khan was initially their top pick for the pivotal role played by Jaideep Ahlawat.

Malhotra candidly shared that when conceptualizing the character of Maharaj, they unanimously agreed that Irrfan Khan was the "only person" who could embody the depth and complexity required for the role. "There was nobody else who could play this role but Irrfan Khan," he emphasized, highlighting Khan's unparalleled acting prowess and ability to bring nuanced characters to life.

However, fate took a different turn with Irrfan Khan's untimely demise in 2020, leaving the team grappling with an irreplaceable loss. It was then that Jaideep Ahlawat's name emerged as a potential successor for the role. Despite initial reservations, Malhotra convinced Ahlawat that he was the perfect fit for Maharaj. "I kept telling Jaideep sir there’s only one actor in the entire universe who can do this, and that’s him," Malhotra recounted, praising Ahlawat's versatility and dedication to his craft.

The journey to bring Maharaj to life wasn't without its challenges. Ahlawat underwent a rigorous physical transformation, which included reshooting his introductory scene after gaining weight post-wrap. Malhotra humorously recalled suggesting VFX for abs, only to be met with Ahlawat's determination to regain his physique naturally. "He took three months to get his body back in shape for just one day of shooting," Malhotra remarked, highlighting Ahlawat's commitment and professionalism.
