Indian Idol season 1 winner Abhijeet Sawant feels that staying relevant in today’s time in the industry is more important than winning singing reality shows. He gave examples of singers like Arijit Singh and Neha Kakkar, who could not win reality shows at that time, are now more successful than the winners. Sawant feels that winning the trophy is not the ultimate goal, but the real achievement is when people recognise the artist for their talent. He also mentioned that many times, winners are chosen based on popularity rather than their merit.

In an interview with Galatta India, Abhijeet was asked what is more important for him to win a show or stay relevant after victory. The singer said, “I believe reaching somewhere is the real challenge. Winning the trophy isn’t the ultimate goal. It’s great if you win, but the real achievement is when people start recognising you, when you rise above your background and build a career from there.”

He added, “Many times, we’ve seen winners chosen based on popularity, not necessarily skill, and sometimes, talented artists lose simply because they lack a fan base... Take Arijit Singh or Neha Kakkar, they didn’t win, but they reached a far higher position than many winners. I say this very honestly and modestly: being noticeable and building an identity matters more than a trophy.”

After winning the first season of Indian Idol, Abhijeet’s first solo album, Aap Kaa Abhijeet Sawant, was released in 2005. Other albums include Junoon (2007), Farida (2013) and Fakira (2018). Earlier this year, Sawant was under major controversy when he called out Indian Idol for favouring sob stories over actual talent. Abhijeet was last seen on Celebrity MasterChef this year, where he showed his culinary skills. The show was later won by popular Television actor Gaurav Khanna.
