Anurag Kashyap has once again become a major topic of discussion in Bollywood following the release of his new movie, Nishaanchi. The crime drama has drawn comparisons to his past work, particularly his cult classic Gangs of Wasseypur. The filmmaker has been revisiting his anecdotes from that era, including his complex relationship with actress Richa Chadha. The actress delivered a breakout performance in Gangs of Wasseypur as the foul-mouthed and feisty Nagma Khatoon, the mother of Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s character. Anurag Kashyap recently revealed that despite her success, Richa Chadha eventually developed resentment towards him and the role. Similarly, in Nishaanchi, Monika Panwar portrays the character of Manjari, a resilient mother to twin sons Babloo and Dabloo. Keeping this in mind, he warned the young actress about the consequences of being cast as a mother.

Anurag Kashyap recently opened up during an interview with The Lallantop and discussed that this industry tends to stereotype women. If an actress has played the role of a mother, she will be stuck playing the role of mothers. Recalling his casting days for the popular movie Gangs of Wasseypur, the director shared, “Not many people have the courage to play a mother to a 30-year-old man. We approached a lot of actresses, but none of them agreed. We ran out of options, and that was the last role to be cast.”

He further added, “Richa Chadha played Nagma in Gangs of Wasseypur. This was at the start of her career; she’d only done Oye Lucky Lucky Oye before that. She was amazing, but the industry stereotyped her. She wouldn’t get offers for main leads. She developed resentments. Once, she said in an interview that playing Nawazuddin’s mother in Gangs of Wasseypur ruined her career. But she said this many years later. That’s when I understood why she had certain resentments. And I thought, ‘You could’ve just told me’.”

Keeping the same experience in mind, Anurag Kashyap warned his new actress Monika Panwar before signing her for the movie Nishaanchi. He expressed, "I told Monika what the consequences could be. I told her that she has the freedom to turn down the part, and if she accepts and develops resentments later, I’m here to get her back on track." The filmmaker further discussed how de-ageing a person with VFX effects can get expensive and requires more effort. He also added that Monika Pnawar is a graduate from the National School of Drama and saw this role as a challenge, and hence, picked it up.
