Anurag Kashyap is celebrated for his bold, gritty, and unconventional movies that have fundamentally shifted Indian cinema. With projects like Black Friday, Dev.D and Gangs of Wasseypur, Anurag Kashyap has always shown an unfiltered and realistic approach towards his work. Instead of choosing big stars from Bollywood, Anurag Kashyap often joins hands with fresh faces. People often regard his work as being ahead of its time, a sentiment reflected in his film Mukkabaaz, which initially gained critical praise rather than major commercial success. Not only by the audience, but Anurag Kashyap also gained attention from lyricist Javed Akhtar for his movie Mukkabaaz.

Anurag Kashyap’s movies often fail to shine at the box office, but always find a place in fans’ hearts. Talking about this pattern, the director recently opened up during an interview with SCREEN and recalled an incident which included Javed Akhtar. The director revealed that after watching Mukkabaaz, Javed Akhtar asked him whether he had any problem with making money.

Anurag Kahsyap said, “Javed saab ne ek baar meri film dekhi thi Mukkabaaz aur film ke end par unhone mujhe bola tha ki ‘Aapko paise kamane se dikkat hai kya? Kya ho jata agar woh hero jeet jata tha? Toh baaki toh sab sahi ja raha tha’ (Javed saab once watched my film Mukkabaaz, and at the end he told me, ‘Do you have a problem with making money? What would’ve gone wrong if the hero had just won in the end? Everything else was going so well’).”

Further, the filmmaker also talked about the writing duo Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, and praised them for their legendary contributions to the world of cinema. He expressed that his upcoming movie Nishaanchi is an attempt to do something similar to what they did as a duo, an effort to recreate the kind of grand, emotional storytelling he grew up watching in their films. He also shared that he will seek his first validation from these two iconic writers when they watch the movie.
