Imtiaz Ali is ready to bring another powerful story to the big screen, this time set during one of the most defining chapters in Indian history – the Partition of 1947. According to reports, actress Banita Sandhu has been cast opposite Diljit Dosanjh in the upcoming period drama, adding even more excitement around the project. The untitled film is set in the 1940s and will explore the deep emotional struggles faced by people during Partition. It is expected to focus not just on historical events, but also on how love, relationships, and family bonds were tested during the chaos of migration.
As per Mid-Day, the film’s first schedule has already begun in Mumbai. The report mentioned that Banita and Diljit were spotted shooting near the Asiatic Library last month. A source revealed, “The film focuses on two love stories. The first schedule kicked off in August this year. Banita, who made her film debut with the Varun Dhawan-starrer October (2018), was last seen in Ravi Chhabriya’s Detective Sherdil. It is where Imtiaz spotted Banita and cast her opposite Diljit.”

About The Movie
The film will reportedly follow multiple generations of families whose lives are torn apart by Partition. A source explained, “Set in the 1940s, the movie looks at Partition and its after-effects from the lens of two lovers. While Sharvari plays the young female lead opposite Vedang, Imtiaz is in talks with two more leading ladies for other prominent roles as the film revolves around different generations of families.” Although it is based on the Partition, the story will not directly showcase Pakistan, but only make passing references to it. Instead, Imtiaz aims to capture the human emotions tied to migration, loss, and heartbreak. Costume designer Sheetal Sharma, who earlier worked with Imtiaz on Chamkila, has also joined the project. The film features an impressive lineup with Diljit Dosanjh, Banita Sandhu, Sharvari, Vedang Raina, and veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah. With such a diverse cast, the project promises a mix of talent across generations.
Meanwhile, Diljit has several other projects lined up. He will soon be seen in Border 2 alongside Varun Dhawan, Ahan Shetty, and Sunny Deol, set for release in 2026. He has, however, opted out of No Entry 2 due to scheduling conflicts.
