Veteran actor Anupam Kher is the latest celebrity to join the ongoing controversy surrounding the Punjabi film Sardaar Ji 3 starring Diljit Dosanjh and Pakistani actor Hania Aamir. The film, which was released worldwide on 27 June 2025, skipping theatrical release in India, has been the topic of discussion due to the involvement of Pakistani artists in the movie. Kher, who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming directorial Tanvi The Great, shared that the Punjabi singer has the freedom to exercise his right, but he wouldn't do the same when it comes to the nation for the sake of art.
Anupam Kher, in a conversation with NDTV, shared that Diljit Dosanjh is entitled to his choices and rights, but he personally wouldn’t do what he did. The filmmaker said, “It’s his fundamental right. He has full freedom to exercise his right and he should be given freedom to exercise it. I can say from my point of view that maybe I wouldn’t do what he did."
Emphasising his point by linking India as his home and Pakistan as a neighbour, citing national loyalty and work duties.
“I’d say, ‘You slapped my father but you sing very well, you play very good tabla, so you come and perform at my house’. But I wouldn’t be able to do that. I am not that great. I won’t hit him back, but I won’t give him the right… The rule that I practice at my home, I practice in my country. I am not that great that I could see my family get hit or see my sister’s sindoor get destroyed for art. Those who can do so, they have all the freedom," Kher added.
Diljit Dosanjh has been at the centre of a controversy, and his film Sardaar Ji 3 was embroiled in one following the tension between India and Pakistan after the tragic Pahalgam terror attack. The involvement of Pakistani actor Hania Aamir in a pivotal role in his movie, didnt sit well with his fans and film body.
Besides, Anupam Kher, actor Ajay Devgn, recently, during the trailer launch of Son of Sardaar 2, shared his views on the same. He stated, I don’t know where the trolling comes from (or) what is right and what is wrong. I’m not in his shoes to comment on that. He would’ve had his problems, and people are thinking from their point of view. So, when you’ve two different points of view, then you can sit and solve it together. I’ll not blame anybody or say that this is right or wrong; they need a conversation."
