Punjabi singer Guru Randhawa got into legal trouble as the Ludhiana court summoned him to appear in front of it on September 2. A complaint was filed by Rajdeep Singh Mann, a resident of Samrala in Ludhiana district. The complaint mentioned that Guru Randhawa’s latest song, Sirra’s lyrics, have highlighted the usage of drugs and there are derogatory words used in it. The complainant has an objection with the line, “Oh jatta de aa kaake balliye… jammeya nu gurti ch mili afeem hai… (We are the sons of Jats. We got opium as our first food when we were born.)”

Rajdeep Singh Mann’s advocate demanded an FIR against Guru Randhawa. He said, “We demand an FIR against Randhawa. The lyrics insult a pious Sikh tradition. The practice of giving gurti is deeply emotional and associated with respect and purity. The song implies that newborns in Jat families are given opium, which is unacceptable,” as quoted by The Indian Express.

The Ludhiana court has asked Guru Randhawa to appear before the court in ‘personal or through counsel’ on September 2. The summons has been issued under section of 223 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Apart from Guru, the complaint also mentioned Apple Music, YouTube, Amazon Music, Instagram, Spotify India, Warner Music India and other online platforms which are hosting the song.
