'I Sucked, People Hated Me': Janhvi Kapoor Recalls Being Depressed After Debut Film Dhadak

Janhvi Kapoor had a difficult time breaking into Bollywood; her first movie, Dhadak, came out soon after her mother, Sridevi, passed away. After the movie's premiere, she recently talked about her battle with depression. The performer claimed that she persuaded herself that viewers didn't like her and that she 'sucked'.

Janhvi Kapoor talked about her 2018 debut opposite Ishaan Khatter on Raj Shamani's podcast on YouTube. While the viewers and industry experts frequently remembered Dhadak as a successful debut, the actor claimed that her own experience was anything but joyous.

'People Hate Me': Janhvi Kapoor

Janhvi Kapoor said, "Every time anyone talks to me about my first film, Dhadak, they say, ‘she was so good in it’ or ‘we loved Dhadak’, but my memory of Dhadak was very different. I was depressed after Dhadak. I thought ho gaya and that packup hogaya. People hate me."

Janhvi Kapoor continued by saying that she had always relied on her mother for comfort and that, following her death, she started looking to the public for the same approval. In retrospect, she claimed that she neglected the movie's accomplishments, such as its successful box office performance, and instead concentrated solely on criticism.

Janhvi Kapoor Said She 'Sucked'

Janhvi Kapoor convinced herself that audiences didn't like her and that she 'sucked' since she was only listening to criticism. "I didn’t concentrate or even acknowledge the fact that it was a very… I think it was the most commercially successful film with newcomers up until Saiyaara. It didn’t even click with me that it was a hit. I just knew that I sucked and people hated me… Because I only looked at the negative, and that became my reality."

Dhadak, a remake of the critically acclaimed Marathi film Sairat, was directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Karan Johar. It made over 110 crore at the box office.

Janhvi Kapoor's Upcoming Movies

Janhvi Kapoor has since made appearances in several movies, such as Good Luck Jerry, Ghost Stories, Gunjan Saxena, and Roohi. Her most recent role was in Shashank Khaitan's romance comedy Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, which also starred Varun Dhawan, Sanya Malhotra, and Rohit Saraf. 

Janhvi will be seen alongside Ram Charan in the Telugu movie Peddi, which is slated for release later this year.
