Imtiaz Ali's Netflix biographical drama Amar Singh Chamkila has made history by securing two nominations at the 2025 International Emmy Awards. The film has been nominated for Best TV Movie/Mini-Series, while its lead actor Diljit Dosanjh has been recognised in the Best Performance by an Actor category for his powerful portrayal of the legendary Punjabi singer. The 53rd International Emmy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in New York City on November 24, where Amar Singh Chamkila will be the lone Indian entry competing against top-notch productions from around the world.
Opening about the same, Imtiaz Ali said in a conversation with NDTV, "Thanks for bringing the happy news that Chamkila has been nominated for two International Emmy Awards, for Diljit Dosanjh as Best Actor and for Chamkila as Best Film. A lot of messages have already come from so many people congratulating me, so it means it's a really big deal. I would like to congratulate the entire team of Chamkila, and also the people of Punjab, who contributed to this film. It is very much a film of that land. I congratulate Diljit Dosanjh twice over."
Amar Singh Chamkila: Amar Singh Chamkila is a 2024 Indian biographical drama film directed and produced by Imtiaz Ali, starring Diljit Dosanjh as the titular character and Parineeti Chopra as his wife Amarjot. The film, featuring music by A.R. Rahman and lyrics by Irshad Kamil, premiered in Mumbai on April 8, 2024 and was released on Netflix on April 12, 2024, to critical acclaim, marking a career resurgence for Imtiaz Ali.
The movie follows the story of Amar Singh, a humble singer from a Dalit family in Punjab who initially worked in a sock factory, much to his dissatisfaction. Driven by his passion for music, Amar breaks free from his routine life to connect with local musicians. Under the mentorship of a well-known singer named Jinda, Amar writes lyrics that Jinda uses in his songs without crediting him.

However, an unexpected opportunity arises when Jinda is late to a concert and Amar steps in to perform. His performance, marked by his powerful voice and compelling lyrics, captivates the audience to such an extent that they no longer care to hear Jinda sing. This event, where he earns the nickname Chamkila, sparks his rise to fame, accompanied by both adulation and harsh criticism, until his tragic early death.
