Music composer Ismail Darbar has come under fire after making controversial remarks about his daughter-in-law, actress Gauahar Khan. In a recent interview, Darbar said he doesn’t approve of women working after marriage or motherhood, sparking outrage across social media. Although he praised Gauahar for being a caring wife and mother, his statement that “the right to stop her from working belongs only to my son, Zaid” angered many. Netizens labelled his comments as regressive, misogynistic, and disappointing coming from a public figure.

During the interview, Darbar claimed he comes from a “backward family” and said they still turn away during “sensuous” film scenes. He added that he respects Gauahar as part of the family but does not believe in women continuing to work after becoming mothers. His remarks quickly went viral, with many calling them outdated and patriarchal. Social media users pointed out that Gauahar is more accomplished and well-known than her husband Zaid Darbar, questioning why she should need anyone’s permission to pursue her career.

Meanwhile, reddit and X (formerly Twitter) users strongly criticised Darbar’s views. One user commented, “Who’s going to earn then? Gauahar is the most famous and successful in this family.” Another added, “What gives Zaid the right to stop her from working? She’s an adult, not a minor.” Others slammed the “patriarchal mindset,” saying that Darbar’s comments reduced women to homemakers only. Some even mocked the family dynamic, writing, “The reason people know your son is because of Gauahar,” while another sarcastically warned, “Nagma still has time to run.”
