Janaki V vs State Of Kerala Review: After much delay and controversy Malyalam movie Janaki V vs State Of Kerala, starring veteran actor Suresh Gopi, finally released in cinemas on 17th July 2025. The Malayalam courtroom drama was initially surrounded by debate due to its original title. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) raised objections over the use of the name ‘Janaki’, claiming it referred to the Hindu goddess Sita and was therefore unsuitable for a character who is a sexual assault survivor. 

Originally set to release on 20th June, the Malayalam film was first pushed to 27th June, and finally hit the screens today. Following the controversy, Suresh Gopi posted a striking new poster on Instagram earlier to confirm the new title of the movie. The caption read, “Behind every delay… is a truth worth fighting for and in the end that truth shall always prevail!!! JANAKI V vs. STATE OF KERALA U/A 16+ CERTIFICATION WORLDWIDE RELEASE ON JULY 17TH.” Following backlash and discussions, the title was slightly adjusted and the Malayalam movie was granted a UA 16+ certificate.

Despite high anticipation, the early reactions on social media have been largely mixed, with some users disappointed by the film’s execution. Check all the X (formerly twitter) reviews here:

One user shared, “Below Average One. A Typical R**e Victim Based Investigation Thriller, which is Templated & Typical Having No Impacts or Engaging Elements. 10 Minutes Before Interval Were Only Good Moments also Worst Dialogue & Performances from cast. TOTALLY 2/5.”

Another viewer commented, “SG and Anupama were great and the first half was also good. However, the film went downward in the second half.” (translated from Malayalam)

A third netizen expressed, “J.S.K (Janaki vs State of Kerala). R**e survivor vs State sounds powerful, but the film totally lacks impact. No depth, no freshness. Suresh Gopi feels force-fitted, dialogues are cringe, and the whole thing just drags. Not satisfied.”

Janaki V vs State Of Kerala tells the story of Janaki, a woman who seeks justice through the legal system after going through a traumatic experience. Meanwhile, Suresh Gopi plays Advocate David Abel Donovan, the lawyer who fights for Janaki, portrayed by actress Anupama Parameswaran, marking her return to Malayalam cinema after a four-year break. The supporting cast includes Madhav Suresh (Suresh Gopi’s son), Shruthi Ramachandran, Divya Pillai, Askar Ali, Baiju Santhosh, Shobi Thilakan, Jayan Cherthala, Kottayam Ramesh, and Joy Mathew.
