Dharmendra stirred controversy in the B-town industry when he married actress Hema Malini despite being married to first wife Prakash Kaur. After this big step, Dharmendra was labelled a 'womaniser' by many, except for Kaur, who defended him, saying "Any man would have preferred Hema over me." It was Prakash Kaur who stood by Dharmendra when the entire industry was against him. Here is all you need to know about the legendary star's first wife:

When Prakash Kaur married Dharmendra

Prakash Kaur married Dharmendra in 1954 when he was only 19, long before he entered the film world. Their union was a traditional, arranged marriage rooted in their Punjabi heritage. They together have two sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, both prominent Bollywood actors and daughters Vijeta and Ajeeta. Prakash Kaur has been the steady anchor of the Deol family, overseeing their upbringing and maintaining the household.

Despite being the wife of a film legend and the mother of two celebrities, Prakash Kaur has consistently shied away from the limelight, choosing instead a quiet, private life away from media attention.

Dharmendra-Prakash's marriage never dissolved despite his wedding to Hema Malini

However, Prakash's life took a dramatic turn after Dharmendra fell in love with the 'Dream Girl' Hema Malini on the sets of Sholay, whom he married in 1980. Dharmendra remains legally married to Prakash Kaur, even though he later wed Hema Malini; the 1954 marriage was never dissolved and recent reports—confirmed by his son Bobby Deol—state that Dharmendra and Prakash Kaur are still living together at their farmhouse.

However, in a 1981 interview with Stardust, Prakash Kaur defended Deol's actions, asking, "Why only my husband? How dare anyone call my husband a womaniser when half the industry is doing the same thing?"

Prakash Kaur said that all heroes are having affair and doing second marriage, adding, "He may not be the best husband, though he is very good to me, but he is certainly the best father. His children love him a lot. He never neglects them."She further added, "I can understand what Hema is going through. Even she has to face the world, her relatives and her friends. But if I were in Hema's place, I would not have done what she did. For, as a woman, I can understand her feelings. But as a wife and a mother, I do not approve of them."
