Aamir Khan and Fatima Sana Shaikh first appeared together onscreen in the sports drama Dangal, where they won audiences' hearts as a father and daughter duo. Reviews of their performances were largely positive, and the film was a box office success. A few years later, the two appeared together in Thugs of Hindostan. In this film, their roles were not only different, as they were not playing father and daughter; they were actually love interests. Recently Aamir Khan opened up about this change to a love interest when he stated he didn't have a problem acting as Fatima's lover despite having previously acted as her father.

The Sitaare Zameen Par actor, in an interview with Lallantop, revealed that director Vijay Krishna Acharya initially felt unsure about adding a romantic angle between the two. “He told me, ‘We won’t have a romantic track between you and her because she played your daughter in Dangal. The audience won’t accept it,’” Aamir shared. However, the actor disagreed with that logic. He responded, “I’m not her real-life father, and I’m not her real-life boyfriend either. We’re just making a film.”

Meanwhile, Aamir pointed out that audiences' intelligence means they also know how to delineate between fact and fiction. He remarked that even eminent actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Waheeda Rehman have acted together as mother and son and also as love interests in other movies. “The audience isn’t stupid. If we think they won’t understand, we are underestimating them,” he said.

Was Fatima Not The First Choice For Khan’s Thugs of Hindostan?

Aamir also revealed that Fatima was not the first choice for Thugs of Hindostan. “The role was offered to many actresses – Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, Shraddha Kapoor – but they all refused. No one wanted to do it,” he said. Aamir admitted the script might have been the reason behind the rejections. “The original script never got made. It kept changing, and I would argue with the makers daily, saying this version wouldn’t work,” he added. The movie, released in 2018, had a huge opening but failed to impress critics and audiences. Despite its star cast and large-scale production, Thugs of Hindostan didn’t perform well after the first day.

On the work front, Aamir Khan recently was seen in Sitaare Zameen Par along with Genelia Deshmukh. The film is said to be doing well at the box office and has crossed the Rs 100 crore mark. Meanwhile, Fatima Sana Shaikh continues to juggle different roles and was last seen in Dhak Dhak and is preparing for her upcoming theatrical release Metro In Dino. She will also share the screen with R. Madhavan in Netflix’s movie Aap Jaisa Koi.
