Aamir Khan, a versatile actor in Bollywood, is currently revelling in the success of his recently released movie Sitaare Zameen Par. The movie is the spiritual sequel to the 2007 beloved movie Taare Zameen Par and was released on 20th June 2025 to favourable reviews. With Aamir celebrating a successful run of his film, he has recently shared a rare and darker time in his life — a very emotional time during the separation from his first wife, Reena Dutta.
Aamir Khan, known for keeping his personal life private, opened up in an interview with The Lallantop, where he spoke about how his divorce in 2002 led him into a dark phase filled with depression and alcohol. Even though Lagaan was released that same year and brought him great fame and recognition, Aamir said he felt completely lost. “I was not even working then. Neither did I care to meet anybody,” he admitted. “The same year, Lagaan released, and a newspaper article called me ‘Man of the Year, Aamir Khan’. I found it very ironical,” he added.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Aamir recalled those tough days and sang a few lines from the emotional song Aapki Yaad Aati Rahi Raat Bhar from the 1978 film Gaman, expressing the pain he felt during that time.
Aamir And Reena’s Love Story
Aamir and Reena's romance began in their youth, when they were both neighbours. After first rejecting him, Reena ultimately agreed to be with Aamir, and they secretly married. Reena had a small role in Aamir's first film, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. They were married for 16 years and had 2 children — Junaid and Ira. After a year of working together on Lagaan, Aamir and Reena decided to separate.
Speaking about their relationship on Koffee with Karan, Aamir earlier said, “Reena and I were married for 16 long years. When we split up, it was traumatic for us and our families. We tried to deal with the situation as best as we could. Reena and I did not lose love or respect for each other post our split.”
Following his divorce from Reena, Aamir subsequently married the filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005. They were together for 16 years and have a son named Azad. In 2021, they announced their separation but still continued to co-parent Azad with care and mutual respect. Aamir is now dating Gauri Spratt, who has been a close friend for over 20 years. Their friendship deepened after he separated from Kiran Rao and eventually became a public relationship.
