The COVID-19 pandemic was a tough time for the world, with people stuck in their homes, some alone, while others were with family. The only constant things were the phone and OTT platforms, which saw a major boost in India. Alongside, there was a booming career of social media content creators. Among them was Niranjan Mondal, who quit his chartered accountancy to start creating content online. With the world shut down, Niranjan was also stuck at home with his phone as a companion. He thought of bringing housewives, young girls and nosy aunties to life with his content. But, unlike other creators, was his family supportive? In an interview with The Daily Jagran, the content creator revealed details about his initial days of creating content and how his family reacted to his decision.
When asked whether his family was supportive or sceptical about his choice to become a social media content creator, Niranjan Mondal answered, “Honestly, my parents didn't even know what I was doing. I had quit my charter. They were just worried, like genuinely worried. Because I was just sitting at home, talking to my phone, making videos, posting them online. So, it's just, they only wanted me to have a stable future. So, that's it. And now, when they see things are working out, they are, like, happy. They're really happy now.”
Niranjan also shared his thoughts on portraying female characters, which was certainly a bold move when he started. The content creator said, “See it was really random, nothing was pre-planned, it was the pandemic. The world was shut down, I was stuck at home like everyone else, my phone was the one and only partner that time. So I would say it was all God's plan and portraying housewives and young girls, not housewives and young girls only, mostly nosy aunties and their gossips and relatives I have started with and that's because I feel maybe I have grown up surrounded by this wonderfully dramatic hilarious character in my real life and I feel every Bengali house has that Meeta aunty, so why not bringing them to life.”
The social media content creator, who recently made his transition to acting with the Bengali web series Birangana, said that his passion for acting evolved with his content creation. He added, “Not only acting, now I love the whole process of filmmaking. And if you talk about Birangona and the shifting, I won't take any credit for that. It was all about my wonderful director. He saw the chirag in me. I just followed his instructions.”
Today, Niranjan Mondal has become a household name with his content creation and now more so for his role as Chirag in the critically acclaimed Hoichoi series Birangana. With 1.2 million followers on Instagram, he continues to stay connected with audiences with related content on social media. Earlier this year, he was awarded Best Regional Creator.
