The 2024 Kolkata RG Kar rape and murder case created a shockwave in the country, which ignited conversations about safety and accountability at the workplace, home and other spaces where it needs to be nurtured and not exploited. Despite months of protest in Kolkata, the question remains: Is society still aware of the issues raised by the horrific incident? Too often, protests fade and public discussions come to a halt over time. As a society, where are we leading? Only to social media protests till the cases make headlines? Not really, there are a few people, like popular Bengali social media content creator Niranjan Mondal, also known as LaughterSane, who are still voicing the uncanny truth of society that has been ignored.

Niranjan shared a powerful video on Instagram in which he talks about how the youth are busy making anniversary posts on the RG Kar case while their loved ones are still facing harassment and nobody is there to speak or protest against this serious issue. The video might have ended in a few seconds, but the thoughts behind it need to be spoken about. When The Daily Jagran asked about what he personally thinks about the changes that must be made at the societal and systemic level to reduce the frequency of such crimes, Niranjan gave a thought-provoking response and stated that people need to speak up when a disturbing issue against a woman happens. He believes that the biggest change has to begin with conversations happening at school and home.

Speaking to The Daily Jagran, Niranjan Mondal said, “Honestly, making those videos was really emotionally heavy because, of course, I make people laugh. But sometimes, you know, you can't stay silent when something really disturbing happens. And I think at the societal level, the biggest change has to start with conversations at home, in schools, in friend groups and families and also people need to stop looking away when they see harassment because silence is what allows it to continue and at a systematic level there has to be faster justice, stricter punishment and better support systems for survivors, because when justice is delayed, it tells the survivor that they don't matter. And that is more disturbing for me. See, I'm not an expert or an activist. I'm just someone with social media platforms. So if that platform can spark even a small bit of awareness or empathy, why not? I feel like, of course, I should use it, right?”

Niranjan also shared his opinion about social media content creators taking more initiative in terms of making content on social issues. The content creator added, “Yes, I feel you should. But again, I can't put it on everyone's mouth. I feel it's a personal choice because, you know, not everyone might feel informed or ready to handle the responsibility that comes with it. But for me, yes, I feel if you do have a platform, if you do have a strong feeling like strongly about something, then why not using your reach why not use your social media platforms, why not use your followers count, because even small actions like sharing verified information, sharing a cause or just a normal conversation, You never know. It can be really helpful to others. So if you care about something, then I feel, of course, you should speak up.”
