Veteran actress and talk show host Simi Garewal sparked controversy on Dussehra by defending Ravana, the mythological king traditionally depicted as evil. In a post on X, Garewal argued that Ravana's behavior should be reclassified from "evil" to "slightly naughty". She claimed that despite abducting Sita, Ravana treated her with more respect than women often receive today, providing her with good food, shelter and even women security guards. Garewal also praised Ravana's education, stating he was "more educated than half of our Parliament".

Garewal wrote on X, "Dear Ravana... Every year, on this day, we celebrate the victory of good over evil.. But.. technically.. your behaviour should be re-classified from 'Evil' to 'Slightly Naughty'. Simi Garewal defended her view of Ravana, pointing out that despite abducting Sita, he treated her with respect, providing good food, shelter, and even women security guards, albeit ones who weren't too attractive, implying Ravana's consideration for Sita's dignity.

She further added, "Your request for marriage was full of humility.. and you never threw acids when rejected. Even when Lord Rama killed you.. you were wise enough to seek his apologies. And.. I believe you were more educated than half of our Parliament." Garewal concluded, saying, "Trust me dude.. there ain't no any hard feelings to burn you... Just that it's the In-Thing. Happy Dussera."

Simi Garewal’s post romanticising Ravan sparked strong backlash online, with many users slamming her for ignoring his violent history. Critics cited incidents from the Ramayana, recalling how he tried to violate Vedavati, molested Rambha, and abducted Sita, stressing that his restraint stemmed from curses and fear, not decency.

Others were more blunt, calling her remarks ignorant and attention-seeking. While a few found her perspective unconventional, most argued it glossed over Ravan’s legacy of cruelty, fuelling a heated debate on social media.
