Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika Padukone Car Endorsement Case: Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone have received temporary relief from the Rajasthan High Court in a case filed against them over a car endorsement. The actors, who were accused of misleading consumers by promoting a Hyundai vehicle, faced an FIR lodged in Bharatpur under allegations of cheating and criminal conspiracy. The complaint, filed by a man named Kirti Singh, claimed that he purchased the car influenced by their endorsement but later suffered financial loss due to repeated mechanical problems. On Wednesday, the court stayed the FIR, providing interim protection to both actors and others involved.
Meanwhile, the case dates back to 2022 when Singh purchased a Hyundai Alcazar and later filed a complaint alleging multiple defects. He claimed that the vehicle developed mechanical issues despite being relatively new and argued that the endorsements by Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone played a major role in his purchase decision. He accused them, along with Hyundai officials, of misleading buyers and filed an FIR at the Mathuragate Police Station in Bharatpur. The FIR was registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 420 for cheating, Section 406 for criminal breach of trust, and Section 120B for criminal conspiracy. Apart from the two actors, Hyundai Motor India officials and representatives of its dealership were also named in the case.

On the other hand, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing on behalf of Shah Rukh Khan, argued that actors cannot be held accountable for technical or manufacturing issues. He pointed out that endorsements only serve to promote a product and do not imply responsibility for its quality standards. Similarly, Deepika Padukone’s lawyer, Advocate Madhav Mitra, stated that her role was limited to brand promotions and she had no connection with the car’s production or quality control. The defence also highlighted that the complainant had used the car extensively for nearly three years, driving over 67,000 kilometres, before raising objections. They argued that if Singh faced genuine grievances, he should have approached a consumer court rather than filing a criminal case.

Additionally, Justice Sudesh Bansal, who heard the matter, agreed that the FIR lacked a strong factual basis and stayed further investigation. The court also allowed the possibility of mediation between the complainant and Hyundai representatives to resolve the dispute. The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for 25th September.
