Raveena Tandon recently opened up about a surprising revelation from her early career. The 53-year-old actress revealed that she was the first choice to play Kiran in the 1993 psychological thriller Darr, opposite Shah Rukh Khan. The film, directed by Yash Chopra, went on to become one of the biggest hits of SRK’s career. However, Raveena turned down the role, which eventually went to Juhi Chawla, because she felt uneasy about certain scenes in the film.
Speaking on the ANI podcast, Raveena Tandon said, “Darr had come to me first. Though it wasn’t vulgar, there were a few scenes that I was not comfortable doing.” The actress explained that during that phase of her career, she preferred to avoid roles requiring revealing outfits or intimate moments. “There were some scenes where I had to wear a swimming costume. I never went around in one and said, ‘No, I will not wear a swimming costume,’” Raveena shared. She added that her discomfort wasn’t about judgment but personal boundaries. “There were just certain scenes I didn’t feel comfortable performing,” she continued. Raveena’s honesty reflects the choices many actresses in the ’90s faced while balancing career opportunities with personal values.

Interestingly, Raveena also revealed that she was offered Prem Qaidi (1991), the film that launched Karisma Kapoor’s career. “Even in Prem Qaidi, there was one scene where the hero pulls down the zipper and a strap shows. I was uncomfortable with that too. I used to be uncomfortable with a lot of such things,” she admitted. The actress went on to describe herself as someone who maintained a professional distance with co-stars. “I was never snooty, but I was always like this just a bit reserved. That’s why many treated me like one of the boys,” she added.
Meanwhile, despite rejecting some early opportunities, Raveena carved a successful path for herself in Bollywood, becoming one of the most popular stars of the ’90s and early 2000s with films like Mohra, Andaz Apna Apna, and Dulhe Raja. On the work front, Raveena is now gearing up for the second season of her hit series Karmma Calling, marking yet another exciting chapter in her long and dynamic career.
