The Filmfare Awards honouring the top Hindi films of 2024 took place last weekend in Ahmedabad. For those who are unaware, Laapataa Ladies took up the Best Film trophy, along with 11 other wins. Alia Bhatt was awarded Best Actor (Female), while Abhishek Bachchan and Kartik Aaryan shared the Best Actor (Male). Now, the filmmaker of Kerala Story, Sudipto Sen, has attacked the awards, calling them 'tamasha' in the name of cinema. He also took shots at Kiran Rao's movie, along with two other films that bagged top honours at the awards.
Sudipto Sen, who won a national honour, posted a lengthy message about the Filmfare Awards. The caption on the post read, "I never expect anything great from any Indian cinema establishment, particularly when it is media or cinema journalism. They are mostly enamored by the glamor and rich-world of the stars, exactly the way people from villages and small cities gather in front of Mr. Bachchan or SRK's house. They actually have ZERO contribution towards Indian cinema, cinema art - contrary to the way world media does for world cinemas (sic)."
Sudipto Sen SLAMS Filmfare Awards 2025
Sudipto Sen claimed that the majority of the crowns were taken away by a film that was obviously plagiarised, a film that served as a violent lesson, and a picture that did not stay in theatres for more than 72 hours. He didn't clearly mention the films, but the one he called 'blatantly plagiarised was Laapataa Ladies, the tutorial of brutality was Kill, and the one that didn't survive the box office for more than 72 hours was I Want To Talk.

Sudipto Sen said, "This year Filmfare truly is an expose of Indian ‘nouvelle vague’… A blatantly plagiarised film… a film which is a tutorial of brutality and a film which did not survive the box office for more than 72 hours took away most of the crowns. As expected the best work of 2024 remain elusive. Realised, why Filmfare was so vocal against The Kerala Story receiving National Awards. I am happy that this ‘wood’ community does not recognise, invite or choose us."

The Kerala Story director stated that they were spared of disgusting hypocrisies and phoney tapestries under the name of cinema. "We are spared from faking smiles, faking comradier, and most importantly, not indulging in any sycophancy. In the end - I am happy that we are saved from hobnobbing with this tamasha in the name of cinema in Mumbai and clicking selfies in Cannes. At least we are saved from these ugly hypocrisies and fake tapestry in the name of cinema."
What Is The Kerala Story About?
Sudipto Sen's The Kerala Story, which was one of the most contentious movies of 2024 and for which he received the National Award for Best Director and Best Cinematography, told the tale of Keralan women who were purportedly coerced into joining ISIS.
