Thalaivar 173: In a surprising turn of events, director Sundar C has officially stepped down from Thalaivar 173, the highly anticipated Rajinikanth-starrer produced by Kamal Haasan under Raaj Kamal Films International. The announcement comes just a week after the project’s grand announcement on November 5, which had sent fans into a frenzy over the collaboration between the two legendary actors. Thalaivar 173 was set to mark Sundar C’s reunion with Rajinikanth after nearly three decades, following their hit Arunachalam (1997). The film was expected to blend high-octane action with a compelling story, backed by Kamal Haasan’s creative vision as producer. 

On Thursday, November 13, Sundar C issued a heartfelt public statement confirming his departure. The director cited “unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances” as the reason behind his decision. His wife, actor-producer Khushbu Sundar, initially shared the statement on Instagram before deleting it later. In his note, Sundar C expressed gratitude to both Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, calling the opportunity to collaborate with them a “dream come true.” He wrote, “Due to unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances, I have made the difficult decision to step back from the prestigious project #Thalaivar173. My association with these two icons goes back a long way, and I will always hold them in the highest regard.” He added, “I will forever cherish the moments spent with them. Their wisdom and humility continue to inspire me.”

On the other hand, in his closing note, Sundar C thanked his supporters and promised to make it up to them with upcoming work. “Please accept my apologies if this news has disappointed those who were eagerly anticipating the film. I am committed to continuing to bring entertainment that uplifts your spirits,” he wrote. Despite stepping away from Thalaivar 173, the director assured fans that his creative journey would continue, hinting at new ventures in the pipeline.

Meanwhile, the sudden exit has left fans and industry watchers stunned, especially since Thalaivar 173 was already being touted as one of the biggest Tamil films in recent memory. Social media was flooded with questions about what went wrong in just a week since the film’s announcement. While no replacement director has been named yet, reports suggest that Raaj Kamal Films International is expected to announce a new filmmaker soon to keep the project on schedule for its Pongal 2027 release.
