Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji played the main parts in Karan Johar's film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. It became a box office phenomena and is still cherished today through memes, pop culture, and nostalgic discussions. Kajol played Anjali, a free-spirited, self-reliant young woman torn between Aman (Salman Khan) and Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan). But 27 years later, I wonder, what if Anjali had picked Aman over Rahul?
In case you forgot, Anjali was a tomboy who had feelings for her friend Rahul. He, however, fell in love with Tina (Rani Mukerji). Years after Tina's death, Anjali came back into Rahul's life but she was no longer the tomboy. Anjali wore sarees, loved getting ready with jewellery and of course, she was gonna get married soon! And that's when Rahul professed his love for Anjali on her wedding with Aman.
In every movie, why is it Salman always?

Anjali thi akal ki andhi. Aman deserved better.

My questions are - Did Rahul actually ever loved Anjali? Why didn't he check on her all those years? Why didn't he appreciate her for her true self? He developed feelings only after she met the criteria of being a 'desirable' woman.

Okay so, let's breakdown why Rahul was problematic, first.
Rahul is a classic example of a toxic Bollywood hero, despite his 'cool' appeal. He cannot stand losing to a girl in a basketball game so he CHEATS. He tries to bully Tina but instead falls for her when she sings Om Jai Jagdish, exhibiting that she was 'sanskaari' despite being raised overseas. Years after his wife's (Tina) death, Rahul's affection for Anjali suddenly grows when he witnessed her 'feminine side.' Don't forget that saree's pallu, which falls during the basketball match at the summer camp.
Aman Was A Green Flag
What about Aman though? In my opinion, Aman adored Anjali unconditionally, in contrast to Rahul. He was patient with her, appreciated her, and valued her. "Pehla pyaar kya hota hai woh mujhse pucho" is what we said to Anjali's mother while waiting to be loved by her. Anjali was always his priority. And how can I miss Sajan Ji Ghar Aaye? Aman's ecstatic dance also expressed how excited he was to be with her.
And then, when he realised Anjali loved Rahul, he let her go. In fact, he rushed her to the mandap and got them married.
But What Did Kajol's Anjali Want?
Even Kajol, years later, admitted that if she had to choose personally, she would have picked Aman. In an interview with Humans Of Bombay, she said, "On script level, maybe I would have gone with Salman’s character, but in the film, if you watch the film, there is no choice about the ending; it has to be the way it is."
If we look at it today, Anjali and Aman would have been perfect together. Anjali would have finally received all the love she deserved. And Aman, the man who always valued her, would have treasured her for exactly who she was.
