Rida Tharana is a social media influencer who focuses on women and addresses issues such as gender, weight, and colour discrimination. Her content is deeply intertwined with her own journey - growing up a small rural town in Coorg, navigating the challenges of patriarchy and internalised misogyny, and ultimately reclaiming agency over her life. Rida Tharana spoke exclusively with The Daily Jagran about how she made it big while making the ends meet. 

Who Is Rida Tharana?

Rida Tharana, a content creator and influencer with a community of 1.5 million on Instagram, crafts thought-provoking videos that delve into themes of independence, patriarchy, self-love, and discrimination rooted in gender, body, and skin tone.

For the unversed, Rida Tharana made headlines when The Rebel Kid aka Apoorva Mukhija thanked her friends for supporting her during her difficult moments. On the other hand, eagle eyes fans observed that Rida's name was oddly absent from the list of those she thanked. While Rida chose to stay away from the rumours, her social media follower count dropped, hateful comments began to flood her posts. Later Rida also addressed the criticism by sharing details of her struggles on her own Instagram Story. She revealed that she has been spending a lot of time taking care of her mother, who has been ill. 

Rida Tharana further revealed she has been providing for her family for quite some time now.

Revisiting Rida Tharana's Childhood

Speaking to The Daily Jagran, Rida Tharana revealed, "I come from a family of farmers. We had a small land of coffee. We used to grow our own rice. We lived in a small house which our grandfather built years ago."

Revisiting her childhood time, she said it was 'not perfect but it was beautiful.' "We had electricity issues, dad issues. During rainy season, you could not walk here, could not walk there. Humungous spiders in the estate, we have elephants coming in from here and there. It was a dream as well chaotic at the same time," Rida added. 

"The family did the best they could do in ways that benefitted them and benefitted us. We were three girls to go to convent school for the first time. Coming from a Muslim community it was not very common back there. You know most of them were just like get whatever education that you can get and then we can get you married but my dad was not that way and I am grateful for that. Once puberty hit, it wasn't the same for her," she continued.

How Much Rida Tharana Make At First?

Despite being an ordinary student all her life, Rida Tharana realised that she had to go to Bengaluru in order to pursue her dream of a career in biotechnology. Her parents were against it because they were unable to finance her education. 

Rida Tharana said, "We didn't have a lot of exposure to mainstream media or city life or anything that sort. Out of nowhere I did realise that if I at all I end up staying in this place, there is no way I'll be able grow or have a future that I would want. So I need to figure out a way to get. So, I studies and I got 89% in high school. I got 79% when I took Science. And then I was like I wanted to biotechnology and genetics. I convinced them that the only college that has this is in Bangalore. They were not doing financially well so they were like we can't help you financially, so I decided to take a loan."

Rida added, "I went to Bangalore, I started studying and then realised they were also not doing financially doing okay to like support me and they were not happy about my decision of moving out so they cut me off financially."

"I had no other option but to start worked so I started working as a model for some time and then I started working as an emcee, a promoter so I used to give out pamphlets in malls. Then I slowly moved into becoming an emcee where you host events, have conversations. I would get paid like Rs 800, sometimes Rs 1000-2000. I would save that money up. Cousin would share their clothes with me so, I would just style the clothes that I had," she shared. 

Rida Tharana Was A 'Pandemic Baby'

Rida Tharana disclosed that she was a 'pandemic baby' and people just started connecting, relating and ever since then, she has been creating content.

"One things that kept me going was if I could come from a place where dreaming was not allowed, I could not wear what I want. If I came from zero and made whatever it is that I can, even in my lowest form, I will get back again. When I look back up, it gives me hope, it gives me strength that no matter what happens if I could somehow find a way out, I can do even now," she believes.
