Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor has once again found herself in the spotlight, this time amid an escalating legal dispute surrounding the massive Rs 30,000 crore estate of her late ex-husband, industrialist Sunjay Kapur. Sunjay, who passed away in June this year after suffering a heart attack, left behind a contested inheritance that has now become the subject of a bitter courtroom battle. The matter recently intensified when Karisma’s children, Samaira and Kiaan, approached the Delhi High Court to claim their rightful share in their father’s assets. According to their plea, the children allege that their stepmother, Priya Sachdev Kapur, attempted to manipulate Sunjay’s will in a way that could unfairly impact their inheritance rights. Amid all this, did you know, Sunjay Kapur and Karisma Kapoor had a secret wedding?
Why did Karisma Kapoor keep her marriage with Sunjay Kapur "under wraps"?
Old interviews from the time of Sunjay Kapur and Karisma Kapoor’s wedding have resurfaced on social media. One such interview, given to veteran journalist Subhash K. Jha, features Karisma candidly speaking about her marriage to the late industrialist. She revealed the reasons behind keeping their union low-key and private.
"Yes. I had to keep it under wraps until all of us were sure of what we wanted to do. Sunjay and my family have known each other for many, many years. We’ve been childhood friends. Interestingly, my mum became friends with his mum when she was 18. They’ve remained friends since then," the actress said.
Karisma further added, "All of us kids from both homes grew up together. His sisters are very close to me. We were at school together. So it was almost like love was arranged into a marriage (laughs)."
Sunjay Kapur and Karisma Kapoor’s love story began on a high note, eventually leading to their marriage in 2005. Soon after, Karisma embraced a new chapter in her life as she stepped back from her flourishing acting career to focus on her family. The couple welcomed their first child, daughter Samaira, in the same year, followed by the birth of their son Kiaan in 2011.
However, the seemingly picture-perfect journey did not last forever. By 2014, differences between the two began to surface, and they decided to part ways amicably. Two years later, in 2016, their marriage officially came to an end with a divorce, marking the close of their decade-long relationship.
