Oscars 2025: The Academy Awards, also referred to as the Oscars, are the most coveted honour bestowed to commemorate exceptional accomplishments in the global cinema. This year, the Oscar nomination voting will begin on January 8 and conclude on January 12. The final list of nominees will be announced publically on January 17, 2025. The Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood will host the Academy Awards event on March 2, 2025.
The 2025 Oscar nominees were announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Out of the 323 films on this list, 207 have been shortlisted for the Best Film category. Five of these are, surprisingly, Indian movies. You'll be surprised to hear that two of these five movies were box-office flops while three received global acclaim.
Oscar 2025: 5 Indian Movies On Contenders' List
Kanguva
Surprisingly, Suriya's unsuccessful movie Kanguva made the Oscar shortlist. At first, it was thought to be the most anticipated movie in India. Kanguva, which had a staggering budget of Rs 350 crore, was a box office flop. Bobby Deol and Disha Patani were also featured in the movie, which made Rs 100 crore.

All We Imagine As Light
The film All We Imagine as Light (2024), written and directed by Payal Kapadia, features Hridhu Haroon, Chhaya Kadam, Divya Prabha, and Kani Kusruti. At the 77th Cannes picture Festival, the movie made its debut, took home the Grand Prix, and became the first Indian picture to compete in the main competition since 1994. It received critical accolades when it opened widely in November following a restricted release in Kerala. It was nominated for two Golden Globes, ranked among the top five international films by the National Board of Review, and topped the Sight & Sound vote for greatest film of 2024.
Aadujeevitham
Blessy is the director and co-producer of the 2024 Malayalam survival drama The Goat Life (Aadujeevitham), which is based on Benyamin's best-selling 2008 book of the same name. The true story of Najeeb, a Malayali immigrant labourer in the Gulf, served as the inspiration for the movie. In addition to Jimmy Jean-Louis, K. R. Gokul, Talib Al Balushi, Rik Aby, Amala Paul, and Shobha Mohan, the cast also includes Prithviraj Sukumaran in the starring role.
Girls Will Be Girls
Girls Will Be Girls, written and directed by Shuchi Talati, is her first feature film. It is a coming-of-age story set in 2024. Preeti Panigrahi, Kani Kusruti, and Kesav Binoy Kiron—both of whom are making their acting debuts—star in the movie. Set in a boarding school in the foothills of the Himalayas, it centres on the sexual life of teenaged Mira and her nuanced bond with her protective mother.
Santosh
Sandhya Suri's 2024 Hindi-language criminal drama Santosh takes place in rural northern India. Shahana Goswami plays a widow in the movie who assumes her late husband's position as a police policeman. Santosh received favourable reviews when its global premiere in the Un Certain Regard section of the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May 2024. The movie was chosen as the UK's submission for the 97th Academy Awards' Best International Feature Film category. On January 10th, it will be released in theatres in India.

Swatantrya Veer Savarkar
Directed, co-written, and co-produced by Randeep Hooda, who also plays the title role, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar is a 2024 Hindi-language biopic film on the life of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The movie gives a thorough description of Savarkar's life, covering his early years and significant occasions, and frequently presents him in a very respectful manner. The movie has received accolades for the cast's performances, but it has also drawn criticism for allegedly misrepresenting historical facts and favouring a biased viewpoint.
For the unversed, Putul is the first Bengali movie to be nominated for Best Picture at the 97th Academy Awards. The inclusion is a major turning point for Bengali filmmaking. Additionally, the Academy has revealed the shortlists for 10 categories ahead of the ceremony, including Animated Short Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short, International Feature, Live Action Short, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Original Song, Sound and Visual Effects.
