Oscars 2025: In a significant achievement for Indian cinema, the film Anuja, backed by renowned producers Guneet Monga and Priyanka Chopra, has secured a nomination in the Best Live Action Short Film category at the Oscars 2025 (97th Academy Awards). This nomination brings Indian representation to the prestigious awards ceremony, highlighting the global recognition of Indian storytelling and filmmaking talent.
Anuja tells the poignant tale of a nine-year-old girl working in a back-alley garment factory with her older sister, Palak. The film explores the resilience and struggles of these young characters, presenting a compelling narrative that resonates deeply with audiences.
Ahead of the Oscar nominations announcement, Guneet Monga shared a heartfelt message with her team, stating, "With team Anuja, hours before the Oscar Nominations. This is it!” Reflecting on the film, she added, “Anuja is a beautiful and heartfelt film, and the journey would not have been possible without this beautiful bunch. On the eve of the Oscar nominations announcement, some of the team members were able to come together to celebrate what an incredible win this journey has been so far.”
Monga, who previously won an Oscar for The Elephant Whisperers in 2023, concluded her message with optimism, “Finally—Here's to our labour of love! We're here together, ready to bring it home. See you at the Oscars!!!”

Monga is celebrated for her work on the Oscar-winning documentary Period. End of Sentence. Priyanka Chopra, an international icon and advocate for Indian cinema, continues to champion meaningful and diverse narratives. The film's production team includes Suchitra Mattai, Mindy Kaling, Guneet Monga Kapoor, Krushan Naik, Aaron Kopp, Devananda Graves, Michael Graves, Ksheetij Saini and Alexandra Blaney. Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Anita Bhatia served as executive producers. The cast features Ananya Shanbhag, Sajda Pathan and Nagesh Bhosle.
Netflix recently announced that Anuja will soon be available on their platform. Expressing her excitement, Mindy Kaling said, “Anuja is a story that means so much to me — it's powerful, hopeful, and full of life, just like the incredible young girls it represents. I'm deeply passionate about this film and grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Suchitra Mattai and Adam Graves to bring this important narrative to life. The film brings attention to crucial issues while celebrating resilience, humour and hope. I'm delighted that, with Netflix joining the team, the conversation will expand as it reaches audiences far and wide."
The 97th Academy Awards ceremony will be held on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre, hosted by Conan O'Brien.
